MANAUS – One of the most commented documentaries produced in Brazil in the last decade, the series “Bandidos na TV” (Killer Ratings – Netflix, Brazil 2019) is competing for the award for ‘Best Documentary in Series’ for pay television at the 19th Grand Prix of Brazilian Cinema.

The documentary was directed by award-winning journalist Daniel Bogado. Among the dozens of documentary productions launched last year, “Bandidos na TV” was in sixth place in the most viewed ranking of Netflix.

The event will take place in São Paulo on October 10 and will be broadcast on TV Cultura.  Among the names that make up the award are works such as “A Vida Invisível” by Karin Aïnouz, “Simonal” by Leonardo Domingues, “Hebe – The star of Brazil” by Mauricio Farias and the acclaimed “Bacurau” by Kléber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles.

The production that portrays the life of former Amazonian deputy Wallace Souza who was accused of killing criminals to show on his television program, Canal Livre, in the event that became known worldwide in 2009, as “Caso Wallace”, portrays the value  and the importance of the documentary format.

This is what Amazon producer and director Emerson Medina says.  Medina is the author of four productions divided between fiction and documentary, he was also the author of a web series called “Largo de São Sebastião”.

“The indication highlights the strength of the documentary and also serves to show that good stories are everywhere,” he reinforced.  Medina also highlighted the investments and results that large companies like Netflix are making in the format.

Amazonian filmmaker Sérgio Andrade, author of features such as “A Floresta de Jonathas”, “Antes o Tempo na Acabava” and “A Terra Negra dos Kawá”, said that the documentary translated an unbelievable plot until then.

“I watched the entire production and I have criticism for some episodes, but I must recognize that the documentary in series was perfect to tell a story that in itself is already incredible”, he argued.

Impartial production

Son of Wallace Souza, Willace Souza – one of the participants in the documentary – understands that the nomination of “Bandidos na TV” for the award for best documentary in series is fair.  “All production deserves it because it was an impartial job and they gave a journalism class to Amazonas and Brazil,” he declared.

Willace also commented that the documentary left a great lesson on the role of the press in covering socio-political agendas.  “I believe that the documentary leads to a reflection on the strength of journalism and the responsibility that current and future journalists must carry”.

Among the investigative journalists who participated in the initial phase of the production of “Bandidos na TV” in 2017 until the final phase in January 2019, the director of REVISTA CENARIUM, Paula Litaiff, was one of the press professionals who put journalistic coverage in check.  “Case Wallace” and the conduct of the former deputy, who died in 2010 as a result of cardiac arrest.

“We know that, to this day, the Wallace Case is surrounded by many mysteries.  There are many unexplained images and recordings and unsolved murders.  Deputy Wallace himself went through contradictions, but there is certainly a lot of reflection in the Netflix production about the importance of doing journalism responsibly ”, he concluded.
