MANAUS (AM) – The 772 municipalities of Brazil located in the Legal Amazon Region will be able to receive, through the Amazon Fund, financial resources through projects that focus on forest preservation. The minimum amount is R$ 5 million for each proposal and the ceiling is 5% of the total balance available in the fundraising mechanism.
The measure was approved by the Guidance Committee of the Amazon Fund (Cofa) on Tuesday, 25, among a series of new guidelines and criteria for the application of capital. The initiatives presented by the municipalities will be associated with the actions of the federal and state governments.
According to the executive secretary of the Ministry of Environment (MMA), João Paulo Capobianco, the return of the Amazon Fund is marked by significant resources aimed at meeting the challenge of transforming the economy in the Amazon region.

“Groups of municipalities will be able to jointly present projects that promote territorial reorganization, improve deforestation control, recover degraded areas and create Conservation Units (UCs), creating synergy between them and with the state and federal governments”, explained Capobianco.
Priorities
The diagnosis of the challenges of the Amazon, carried out by the federal government, has as a priority the reduction of deforestation in the biome. According to the socio-environmental director of the National Development Bank (BNDES), Tereza Campello, the selection of proposals also aims to promote sustainable economic models that include family farmers, indigenous peoples, settlers and traditional populations.
“We have the possibility of receiving projects for actions to strengthen family farming, extractivists, sustainable production, projects that strengthen the bioeconomy, forest restoration, monitoring, a set of actions that provide a new sustainable model”, said Campello.

Resources
The Amazon Fund plays a central role in supporting the efforts needed to reverse the new deforestation trends identified by the Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Deforestation in the Legal Amazon (PPCDAm). Currently, the mechanism has R$ 3.9 billion in cash, donated by Norway and Germany.
Since January, the fund has received new donations, from other countries, totaling R$ 3.2 billion. The fundraising, which also comes from Petrobras, only occurs if the reduction of deforestation is proven.
