MANAUS – The advance of Ômicron has mobilized governments and city halls, in the Amazon, to stop the spread of the new variant that, by being more transmissible than the previous ones, has caused an explosion of new cases in the country. In Tocantins, and in three capitals in the Amazon – Manaus (AM), Belém (PA) and São Luís (MA) – the variant will delay the return to classes.

In Tocantins, classes scheduled to begin on February 1 will start on the 14th, in person. The change was requested by municipal administrators, taking into account the situation of the state’s local roads that are being affected by floods, which is where the rural school transport passes through, as well as the concern with the advance in transmission of the Covid-19 and the H3N2 influenza.
The students from Belem, on the other hand, returned on the 24th, remotely, and a staggered return is expected in the coming weeks. This Monday, the 31st, only half of the classes from 6th to 9th grade will return to classes in person. “The adoption of the gradual return of classes is necessary while the process of immunization against Covid-19 of children from 5 to 11 years is not completed”, wrote the mayor Edmilson Rodrigues (Pol), in social networks.
In Manaus, the municipal network starts day 7, in the online model. In announcing the decision, the capital’s city hall said it followed guidelines from health agencies and took care of everyone’s safety.
In the capital of Maranhão, São Luís postponed the return from the 1st to the 22nd, under justification of the Covid-19 and other influenza diseases. According to the city hall of the Maranhão capital, the decision was taken together with representatives of the Health area and the Public Ministry and informs that the school year will be fulfilled.
