Amazonas lawmakers call for Impeachment of Brazil’s president

MANAUS (AM) – Politicians from the Partido Liberal (Liberal Party (PL)) in Amazonas are calling on the people of Manaus to protest in order to pressure the National Congress to approve an impeachment request against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). The demonstration, scheduled for March 16, is set to take place at Antônio Bittencourt Square, popularly known as “Praça do Congresso” (Congress Square), located on Ramos Ferreira Avenue in downtown Manaus.
The call for the protest is being spread through the social media accounts of municipal, state, and federal lawmakers, using the hashtag #ForaLula. Among those involved are federal deputy Captain Alberto Neto, state deputies Débora Menezes and Delegate Péricles, and city councilors Captain Carpê and Colonel Rosses.
In addition to the lawmakers, the leader of the Amazonas Conservative Movement, Sérgio Kruke, also used social media to rally his followers to the protest, with the phrase “Out with the Thief – Impeachment Now!”
In a video, federal deputy Captain Alberto Neto, president of PL Manaus, invites the population to what he calls a “great national movement” to demand impeachment. “So, if you want a better Brazil, let’s take action! Let’s hit the streets! I invite you: March 16, everyone together demanding impeachment now!”
The demonstration was initially called by federal deputies Nikolas Ferreira (PL) and Carla Zambelli (PL) – who was removed from office on Thursday, the 30th, by the São Paulo Regional Electoral Court (TRE-SP) – last week. Recent events, such as the wave of fake news about the taxation of Pix transactions, have shaken Lula’s government and given strength to the opposition.
Impeachment Request
An impeachment request, authored by federal deputy Rodolfo Nogueira (PL-MS), has gathered a total of 118 signatures in the Chamber of Deputies. In Amazonas, so far, only federal deputy Captain Alberto Neto has signed the request.
The number of signatures is not a determining factor for the process to automatically move forward. That decision lies with the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), who has the power to decide whether the request will proceed or remain stalled. Currently, Lula has 19 impeachment requests filed against him. For comparison, during his four-year term, Jair Bolsonaro (PL) faced 158 similar requests.
Opponents claim that Lula committed irregularities in the Pé-de-Meia program of the Ministry of Education (MEC). The Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) last week froze R$6 billion in an investigation into the use of public funds outside the federal budget, which could constitute a violation of fiscal rules known as pedalada fiscal (fiscal backpedaling).
The document also highlights that the program, created to financially encourage public high school students to complete their studies, was implemented without a budget forecast.
