Chief Raoni welcomes Angelina Jolie to indigenous land in Brazil

MANAUS (AM) – The American actress Angelina Jolie visited the Piaraçu village, in the Capoto-Jarina Indigenous Territory (IT), in the state of Mato Grosso, on Wednesday, the 2nd. During the visit, Chief Raoni Metuktire, one of the most well-known indigenous leaders in the world, welcomed the actress, who was there alongside the organisation Re:wild.
Jolie, according to local media reports, was taken to the IT by a Brazilian Air Force (FAB) helicopter, where she met other indigenous leaders of the Kayapó people. Images circulating on social media show the actress interacting with indigenous people from the region.
Although the official reason for the visit has not been disclosed, the actress, according to the press, reportedly discussed deforestation, illegal mining, the expansion of agribusiness on indigenous lands, and other challenges faced by these communities in the country.
In videos shared on X, formerly Twitter, the actress appears accompanied by other individuals, whose names have not been disclosed, as well as by Chief Raoni. Another recording also captures the moment when Angelina Jolie engages in indigenous body painting.
Chief Kayapó Raoni Metuktire is one of the most important indigenous leaders in the country, recognised worldwide. In 2021, Raoni was awarded the title of Honorary Member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and in 2020, he was even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Angelina Jolie Angelina Jolie, besides being an actress, director, and film producer, is also a humanitarian activist. Throughout her career, she has worked in support of refugees, human rights, and humanitarian assistance.
Angelina has been a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) since 2001. Alongside her ex-husband, actor Brad Pitt, she founded the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which aims to support humanitarian causes worldwide. She also advocates for the rights of children and adolescents, as well as promoting campaigns against sexual violence.
