MANAUS – The iconic Jorge Lafond, creator of the character “Vera Verão”, from the humorous program “A Praça é Nossa”, was honored on Wednesday, 29, by the Google Brazil platform. The internet giant stamped Lafond in its “Google” name in the search engine’s Doodle with pop art traces. The artist, who died on January 11, 2003, would be turning 71 this Wednesday, 29th. Black and openly gay, Jorge Lafond was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1952. He was an actor and dancer and one of the great names of the Carnival culture in Brazil.
According to professor, health educator, and founder of Casa Miga, Gabriel Mota, Lafond marked an era: “Jorge Lafond is part of the memory of many LGBTQIA+ people who grew up in the 1990s. A black gay man, who through art entered the homes of many Brazilians bringing humor. For many, a reference. For all, an icon. It is very good that Google celebrates his passage in this plan, after all, gay and black men are usually invisible in the history of our country, proof of this, that no national vehicle divulged anything in his memory”, he said.
For producer Rivaldo Pereira, Jorge Lafond did the impossible: “He was black and gay, a man ahead of his time. How many barriers did he face? How many doors didn’t slam in his face? But, even so, he asserted himself and became one of the biggest names of the black community in Brazilian culture,” he recalled. “And if he were alive, he would be doing what he loved most, which was to show his talent. Long live Jorge Lafond,” applauded the producer.
