BOA VISTA – Eleven municipalities in Roraima declared a situation of emergency because of the flooding of rivers and on account of the rains in the state. The information was confirmed by the State Civil Defense, which updated on Friday, 10, the number of municipalities affected by the natural phenomenon. They are: Amajari, Cantá, Caroebe, Normandia, Uiramutã Alto Alegre, Bonfim, Pacaraima, Iracema, Rorainópolis and São João da Baliza.

Despite the strong storms, the agency clarified that there are no homeless families and there is no need to set up temporary shelters. The more than 30 families who requested support to be removed from their homes were relocated to friends’ and family members’ homes. So far, more than 6 thousand people have been removed from risk areas.

The monitoring of the Rio Branco, which serves as a basis for the beginning of emergency actions, recorded, on Wednesday, 8, the quota of 7.34m. With this quota, the Rio Branco maintains the pattern verified in previous years, when, in the months of May, June and July, it registered a quota variation between 5.63m and 8.50m.

In Normandia, of the more than 100 indigenous communities, 45 have already been directly affected by the problem, and this number may reach 60. At the end of May, the city had accumulated rainfall of 349.2 millimeters at the bridge station over the Itacutu River, and 238.8 millimeters over the Maú River, “a quantity of rainfall well above the average in the region” for the period.

In Uiramutã, the emergency was decreed because the rains were responsible for erosion on the Caracanã side road, which gives access to communities, such as the Ingaricó region, where repairs made by the municipal secretary of Works are undone by water. Furthermore, the road that gives access to the Flexal community is impassable, leaving the location of other nearby isolated. The same problem occurs in the access to the Mutum community.

The communities are unable to sell their crops and to travel to the headquarters to buy food. Because of the floods, the localities have no access to health care, either from the municipality or from the Special Indigenous Health Secretariat (Sesai).

Rainfall forecast

The weather report from the State Foundation for the Environment and Water Resources (Femah) points out that in June it rained the equivalent of 59mm in the capital Boa Vista alone. For the next few days, the forecast for the entire state is that some areas will be affected by rainfall close to 50mm.

The heavy rains should still remain in June and July, according to the forecasts of the National Institute of Meteorology. The meteorologist from Femarh Ramon Alves explained about the forecast for the state.

“The forecast remains the same due to the ‘La niña’ phenomenon, which intensifies the rains in our region. For the coming months it is rainfall above the climatological normal. Our rainy season ends in September, which means six months of rain. The rainiest months are precisely June and July”, explained Ramon.

In a statement, the Government of Roraima said it has been acting directly in response actions and support to municipalities and the population facing the heavy rains and flooding of rivers and streams that hit the state this winter 2022.

He points out that the government is supporting the municipalities in the decreeing of emergency situations, inspecting the roads, side roads, bridges, and other road structures, and activating the agencies responsible for maintenance. The government has also been acting in support of the affected population, making transfers and removing families from affected areas.
