MANAUS (AM) – Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is the target of a Federal Police (PF) operation on the morning of Friday, July 18, in Brasília (DF). The warrants are being executed at Bolsonaro’s residence and at locations linked to the Liberal Party (PL), the former president’s political party.

He will be required to wear an electronic ankle monitor as a restrictive measure and will be banned from accessing social media. The measures were imposed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and confirmed to the press by Bolsonaro’s defense attorneys.

Other precautionary measures include remaining at home between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., and a ban on communicating with ambassadors and foreign diplomats, as well as with other defendants under investigation by the STF.

According to Folha de S. Paulo, the confidential proceeding that led to the application of these measures against Bolsonaro was filed at the STF and assigned to the office of Justice Alexandre de Moraes on July 11, two days after United States President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian products, citing the case against the former president at the STF.

Operation

The Federal Police seized approximately US$14,000 during the search operation against the former president, according to agents involved in the actions. Bolsonaro’s defense stated it received the precautionary measures “with surprise and indignation.” It also declared that he “has always complied with all rulings from the Judiciary.”

In social media posts, the national PL and the party’s president, Valdemar Costa Neto, jointly shared an image of Bolsonaro in front of a replica of the Brazilian flag, with the following caption: “You will see that one of your sons does not run from battle.” In the post’s description, the party refers to Bolsonaro as “captain” and affirms that he is not alone.

In another post, the party expresses “strangeness and repudiation” at the Federal Police operation targeting the former president and the office he occupies within the party. In the statement, the Liberal Party questions what justifies such an action if Bolsonaro has always made himself available to authorities, and argues that the measure imposed by the STF is disproportionate.

“The PL considers the measure determined by the Federal Supreme Court disproportionate, especially given the complete lack of resistance or refusal on the part of President Bolsonaro to cooperate with all investigative bodies,” the party stated.

This is not the first search operation against the former president. In February 2024, the PF executed search and arrest warrants against former ministers from his administration and military personnel involved in a coup plot to keep Bolsonaro in power. One of the targets was the former president himself. He was required to surrender his passport to the PF.
