BRASÍLIA (DF) – President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated that BRICS remains a key piece in ensuring that the ideals of the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Pact for the Future are fulfilled. The statement was made at the opening of the First Sherpa Meeting of the Brazilian presidency of BRICS this Wednesday, 26th.

“In this moment of crisis, our historical responsibility is to seek constructive and balanced solutions. BRICS will also continue to be a key piece in ensuring that the ideals of the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Pact for the Future are fulfilled,” President Lula added.

BRICS is an acronym referring to the grouping of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The term was coined by economist Jim O’Neill of Goldman Sachs in 2001.

Lula reaffirmed that Brazil’s leadership this year will highlight the space for dialogue in the search for solutions and proposals, with an emphasis on multilateralism.

“The Brazilian presidency will reinforce the bloc’s vocation as a space for diversity and dialogue in favour of a multipolar world and less asymmetrical relations. These objectives will guide our work throughout this year,” the Brazilian president anticipated.

This is the first time BRICS is meeting in Brazil in its expanded format, including member countries and partners. “It is a pleasure to welcome Indonesia as the most recent full member and all other members and partners,” said Lula.

SHERPAS

As envoys of the heads of state/government of BRICS members, the sherpas are responsible for leading discussions that will culminate in the Leaders’ Summit, scheduled for the 6th and 7th of July in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to representatives from BRICS member countries (Russia, India, China, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Iran), the meeting in the Brazilian capital was attended by ambassadors from partner countries of the bloc, including Belarus, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
