MANAUS (AM) – Data from the 2025 Public Security Map indicate that Manaus (AM) is the third-largest municipality with the highest femicide rate in Brazil. The survey, released this Wednesday, 11, by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), shows that in 2024, violence against women in the country increased by 0.69% compared to the previous year.
Nationwide, the report highlights that 16 deaths were recorded between January and December in the capital of Amazonas. The crimes occurred in contexts of domestic or family violence, or due to contempt and discrimination related to the female gender. The survey also shows that, on average, around four women were murdered per day in 2024 in Brazil due to their gender.
One of the most high-profile cases in Manaus (AM) occurred in November of last year. Marketing assistant Nariane Caresto Garcia Sena was a victim of femicide in the Petrópolis neighborhood, South zone of Manaus. Investigations by the Amazonas Civil Police (PC-AM) found that she was murdered by her ex-partner with a bladed weapon. The main suspect in the crime was identified as Rosinaldo Kennedy Luz César.
Nariane had been in a relationship with Rosinaldo for four years. The former couple had two children, aged one and three. According to family members at the time, the victim was trying to regain custody of the children when she was killed.
According to information from residents who knew the victim, the couple had been separated for six months. The separation reportedly happened because Rosinaldo was aggressive and spent her money on gambling.

Violence against women
The data released by the MJSP this Wednesday, 11, also show that Amazonas is the fourth state with the highest number of cases of violence against women in 2024, with 30 cases. The figure presented this year represents an increase of 30.43% compared to the femicides (23) recorded in 2023.
The state also ranks with the second-highest rate in the North Region, with 1.41 femicides per 100,000 women, second only to Acre with 1.82. The numbers from the Public Security Map place Amazonas above the national average, which was 1.34.
Countryside
The countryside of the state is also marked by gender-based violence. In September 2024, Raimunda da Silva Leite, 36 years old, was stabbed to death by her ex-partner, Jackson Bezerra da Silva, 37 years old, on a street in the municipality of Lábrea (AM), 702 kilometers from Manaus. The crime was witnessed by the victim’s daughters.
According to the Amazonas Civil Police (PC-AM), the crime was allegedly motivated by Jackson’s refusal to accept the end of the relationship. Jackson was arrested and cried during his statement to the police, showing remorse for the crime committed. The crime was even recorded:
Rape victims
Other data from the Public Security Map for Amazonas show that the state ranks second among all others with the highest percentage increase in rape victims between 2023 and 2024. The report also indicates that the capital of Amazonas is the fourth-largest city in homicide rates in the country, with 666 cases. Nearly 1,050 deaths were recorded in the state.
Amazonas also stands out nationally in another crime: attempted homicide. According to the data, the state had the highest increase in Brazil, with 97.53%. In total, 480 cases were recorded between January and December, compared to 243 in the previous year.
The data collection is carried out with the federative units through the Statistical Data Validator System (Sinesp VDE). The survey highlights the essential role of statistics in understanding the public security landscape in Brazil.
