Like women, men also experience a period of hormonal decline: andropause. This process of Androgenic Deficiency in Male Aging (Daem) deserves special attention, especially for men between 45 and 50 years old, warns the urologist and master professor at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), Flávio Antunes. During the pandemic, studies pointed to a possible relationship between the worsening of those infected by the coronavirus and the lower levels of the hormone testosterone.

The study by Turkish scientists, published in September last year in the edition of The Aging Male, brings a possible relationship between the drop in testosterone in patients in the most serious states of Covid-19. Experts verified the loss of libido in most of those analyzed. The study, still new to the scientific community, was carried out with 221 men, at different levels of disease severity.

The main male sex hormone is associated with the immune system of Organs respiratory organs, but Turkish research has left many gaps yet to be reconsidered. Even so, the urologist Flávio Antunes says that the data cannot be alarmed or neglected. Even so, the urologist Flávio Antunes says that the data cannot be alarmed or neglected.

Andropause Symptoms

According to the doctor, when there’s a decrease in testosterone, there’s also a decrease in libido, erection capacity, decreased muscle mass, and increased body fat. Men also report that they become irritated more easily and some do. Andropause can directly affect the male reproductive system, causing infertility.

“Usually, the hormone falls between the ages of 45 and 50 and it decreases sexual performance. The ideal is for men to undergo routine exams from the age of 40, at least once a year”, detailed the specialist.

Men who are under 40 and have symptoms should see a specialist immediately. Testosterone replacement can be done in several ways. The most common are through gels and adhesives placed on the skin, in addition to injections indicated by the doctor.

Posso me medicar?

Flávio Antunes warns about the use of medications without medical advice. “Many men don’t like to go to the doctor and try to self-medicate to increase the levels of the hormone, but that is wrong. The use of testosterone can have several consequences. It can interfere with the production of sperm, it can help increase the risk of liver cancer and it can lead to a decrease in endogenous production, bringing consequences ahead”, he said.

How to avoid?

Among the ways to avoid an acceleration in the hormone drop levels are physical exercises. People who do activities every day, who control their weight and maintain a balanced diet usually maintain normal testosterone levels. The urologist stressed that the greater the weight, the greater the risk of the hormone production decreasing.

Prostate cancer and testosterone

Asked about the relationship between andropause and prostate cancer, urologist Flávio Alencar says that the drop in testosterone is not related to the origin of the disease. “The two are not related, but if the person already has prostate cancer and starts hormone replacement, this increase in testosterone can stimulate the growth of the tumor. That’s why it’s always important to make an evaluation with the urologist before the replacement to check for prostate cancer”, he concluded.
