MANAUS – The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) of Amazonas opened on Friday, 19, a civil investigation to investigate the measures taken against the conflicts between indigenous people of the Rouxinol village, in the region of the Tarumã-Açu River, in Manaus. The prosecutor gave 15 days for the Regional Council of Funai (CR-Funai) Manaus, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office Specialized with Funai (PFE/Funai) Manaus and the State Indian Foundation (FEI) to provide explanations.

The document, signed by Attorney Fernando Merloto Soave, recalls that the Federal Constitution of 1988 recognizes indigenous people’s social organization, customs, languages, beliefs, and traditions, and that the Union is responsible for protecting and enforcing respect for all their assets.

In view of this, when opening the inquiry, the MPF considered a manifestation registered at the prosecutor’s office reporting the possible conflicts between the indigenous people, in addition to certified information about the monitoring of the PFE/Funai and the maintenance of the impasse.

According to the publication, the organizations cited in the document should send a circular letter with copies of the representations presented by the indigenous people and the MPF certificates with updated information about any measures adopted in the face of the conflict.

Unaware

CENARIUM MAGAZINE sought the National Indian Foundation (Funai), the body responsible nationally for regional councils, and the State Indian Foundation (FEI) questioning whether the entities were notified about the civil investigation and what measures were adopted in the face of conflict between the Indians.

As of the publication of this article, Funai has not answered the questions. On the other hand, the communication department of FEI said that it has not yet been notified by the MPF and that both the office and the legal department of the body have no knowledge about the conflicts between indigenous people.
