Northern Region leads increase in traffic deaths in Brazil in 2024

MANAUS (AM) – In 2024, the Northern Region showed the highest percentage increase in traffic-related deaths. Among the five highest rates, four states are from the North. Amazonas ranks first on the list, with an increase from 177 to 261 victims (47.46%), followed by Rondônia, from 256 to 361 (41.02%) and Acre, from 93 to 130 deaths (39.78%).

The 2025 Public Security data, released this Wednesday, 11, by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, also show another state from the Northern Region. In fifth place in the growth of traffic deaths, Roraima had an increase of 30.77% in deaths of this nature, second only to Santa Catarina, with an increase of 37.85%.

Brazil recorded 26,138 traffic deaths, which represents an average of 71 fatal victims per day. Compared to the previous year, when 23,992 deaths were recorded, there was an increase of 8.94%, with 2,146 more victims.

The national traffic mortality rate per 100,000 inhabitants followed this rise, going from 11.33 in 2023 to 12.30 in 2024, an increase of 8.94%.

According to the Atlas of Violence, deepening the knowledge about youth deaths in traffic also enables the planning of specific actions, such as awareness campaigns about the risks of driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.

Cities

Regarding municipalities, Manaus ranks sixth among those with the highest rate of traffic deaths in Brazil, with 174 victims in 2024. Compared to the previous year, there was a 21% increase in the number of fatal traffic accident victims in the capital of Amazonas.

In the city-by-city analysis, Rio de Janeiro (RJ) topped the ranking, with 706 fatal traffic victims in 2024. Next come São Paulo (SP), with 657 deaths; Brasília (DF), with 242; Recife (PE), with 179; Fortaleza (CE), with 176; Manaus (AM), with 174; São Luís (MA), with 169; Belo Horizonte (MG), with 165; Duque de Caxias (RJ), with 153; and Goiânia (GO), with 126.
