MANAUS (AM) – Federal Deputy Erika Hilton (Psol/SP) spoke this Wednesday, 16 April, about being classified as “male” by the United States on her American visa. The parliamentarian stated that this action constitutes transphobia and a disrespect to her Brazilian civil records, as well as being part of a “politics of hate” agenda of President Donald Trump’s government.
Erika Hilton stated, via social media, that she was identified with the male gender on a new United States visa. On a previous visa, issued by the same country in 2023 during Joe Biden’s administration, it indicated that she was of the female gender, in accordance with the identity of the trans parliamentarian.
The parliamentarian attempted to obtain the document to attend the Brazil Conference at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Upon receiving the document, she found that it had the incorrect gender. According to Hilton, this did not surprise her. She explained that all documents presented to the American government are amended in accordance with Brazilian legislation.
“This has already been happening in the documents of trans people in the US for a few weeks. I am not surprised by the level of hatred and the fixation these people have with trans individuals. After all, the documents I presented are amended, and I am registered as a woman, including on my Birth Certificate,” she declared.
Hilton added that the action of the American government ignores official documents, as it sought to discover whether the person had previously had a different registration. Despite the measure, the deputy emphasised that her existence and rights are guaranteed by Brazilian legislation.
“In other words, they are ignoring official documents from other sovereign nations, even of a diplomatic representative, to try to discover whether the person, at some point, had a different registration. But, at the end of the day, I am a Brazilian citizen, and I have my rights guaranteed and my existence respected by our own constitution, legislation, and jurisprudence,” she further declared.
Erika Hilton also stated that the list of targets of the US continues to grow, which is part of a “politics of hate” agenda. The parliamentarian intends to take action against US President Donald Trump at the United Nations (UN).

Warnings
This year, after assuming the American government for the second time, Donald Trump enacted and announced plans related to the trans community, including prohibiting trans individuals from serving in the armed forces and blocking support for gender-affirming healthcare for minors.
In January, Trump signed an executive order stating that there are only two biological sexes, male and female, and that US passport holders would need to have a passport reflecting the sex assigned to them at birth.
In light of these measures, several countries have issued warnings to their citizens about travelling to the United States, such as Denmark: “If you have the gender designation X on your passport or have changed gender, it is recommended to contact the US embassy before travel to obtain guidance on how to proceed,” declared the Danish government.
Finland issued a warning about travel to the US, noting that “if the gender listed on the applicant’s passport does not match the gender assigned at birth, US authorities may deny the travel authorisation or visa application.”
Germany’s warning stated: “Travellers who have the gender marking ‘X’ or whose current gender marking differs from birth should contact the relevant US diplomatic mission in Germany before entering the country and find out the applicable entry requirements.”
