Understanding the case
Bruno and Phillips were threatened before they disappeared, according to the Union of Indigenous People of Vale do Javari (Univaja). Bruno Araújo was a constant target of threats, due to the work he had been doing with the indigenous people, against invaders in the region, fishermen, miners and loggers. Phillips, on the other hand, according to the Guardian newspaper, is working on a book about the environment, with the support of the Alicia Patterson Foundation.
