MANAUS – The Covid-19 pandemic completes two years this Friday, 11. It was on this same date, on a Wednesday in 2021, that the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the coronavirus was a pandemic. After going through bad times – such as the oxygen crisis at the beginning of last year – Amazonas has registered advances in vaccination coverage and a decrease in cases and hospitalizations by the virus. In addition, also on Friday, the governor Wilson Lima (União Brasil) announced the disobligation of wearing masks in open places.

Currently, according to a survey on the website of the Health Surveillance Foundation – Dr. Rosemary Costa Pinto (FVS-RCP), the state has 80.9% of the population, 4.2 million inhabitants, with complete vaccination coverage, ie, people who took the two initial doses of the immunizing against the virus. As for the registration of new cases, 552 were reported until Thursday 10th. The number is considerably lower than the one registered at the peak of the spread of the Omicron variant earlier this year, when the number of new cases reached more than 8,000 in just 24 hours.

Due to this scenario, the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima, announced that the use of masks in open places is no longer required throughout the state. The measure was announced after the meeting of the Interinstitutional Committee of Confrontation of Covid-19, at the Integrated Center of Command and Control (CICC), in the south-center of Manaus. The head of the state Executive also said that in 20 days will be analyzed the possibility of disobliging the use of mascara, throughout the state, indoors.

“Due to the reduction of cases of Covid-19, our committee decided, and as of today we are publishing the decree, recommending the disobligation of the use of masks in open environments throughout the state of Amazonas,” announced the governor of Amazonas. “We recommend for people who are over 70 years old, to wear the masks. Because these people are the ones who are aggravating it and are the people in the most vulnerable condition”.

Reduction

“Today we have 25 people hospitalized in both clinical and ICU beds. There are 12 people hospitalized in the interior of the state, all in clinical beds, and 53 cities do not have any hospitalized patients. Most of the people hospitalized are over 60 years old. Hence the need to take extra care with the elderly and also with people with comorbidities”, emphasized Wilson Lima.

“The Amazon had, in January, a peak and since January 25 we are following a reduction in the number of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. With this scenario, we are maintaining an average of 400 cases/day, and with the advance of vaccination it was possible to relax, understanding that we need to have responsibility”, said the president of FVS-RCP, Tatyana Amorim.

Relaxation of restrictions

Also according to the governor, even with the disobligation valid throughout the state, “each city hall will take the measure according to their needs and understanding. Earlier this week, the Manaus City Hall announced that the use of masks in open environments will no longer be mandatory as of March 16.

Wilson Lima also announced the relaxation in the hours of operation and crowding of establishments. “No restriction on hours and occupancy, as long as they follow health protocols. We recommend that people who participate in these events have a complete and updated vaccination scheme. This is an appeal we make”, concluded the governor.

Parintins Festival

Also on Friday morning, Wilson Lima also announced the date of the Parintins Folkloric Festival, considered one of the largest in Brazil. The boi-bumbá event used to take place annually in the island, located about 369 kilometers from Manaus, but had the traditional event suspended due to the pandemic.

The 55th edition of the Parintins Folkloric Festival will take place on June 24, 25 and 26. The dispute between Garantido and Caprichoso is the biggest income of the city Parintins.
