MANAUS (AM) – The Amazonas State University (UEA) will start offering next year a bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence (AI). The degree is unprecedented in Brazil at a public university and will initially be available in the municipalities of Itacoatiara and Parintins, located 176 and 369 kilometers from Manaus, respectively.

The announcement of the new course was made this Tuesday, the 17th, by the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (UB), and the UEA rector, Professor Dr. André Zogahib, at the State government headquarters in the West Zone of the Amazonian capital. The openings will be granted through the Serial Admission System (SIS) and the UEA 2025 entrance exam, which together total 3,700 opportunities.

SIS registration starts on July 21 and runs until August 28. The SIS exams will be held on October 26. Candidates for the entrance exam will take the test on October 27 and 28. Each municipality will have 30 vacancies available, offered in the in-person modality and mediated by technology.

For Governor Wilson Lima, the initiative of this unprecedented course in the country is a historic step in the State’s education. “We are making a historic step because, definitely, we are participating in the new technological revolution we are living today. We are launching a course at our UEA, being among the pioneers in Brazil, because in public universities these courses only exist in Pernambuco and Goiás,” he said.

Lima advocates implementing the use of Artificial Intelligence as an ally in daily health care, education, public safety, and other areas where AI can be implemented. “What people tend to see when talking about Artificial Intelligence is very superficial because they understand AI as someone generating voice with created words, but it goes far beyond that. For example, in Medicine, we are already using Artificial Intelligence at Delphina Aziz Hospital; the urine test results come out in two minutes, and the echocardiogram today we can deliver in 10 minutes,” he stated.

Rector André Zogahib said that still in the second semester this year, the state university will deliver two major facilities for students, such as an anatomy laboratory and a model outpatient clinic for attending the population in the interior.

“We will launch, still in the second semester, two major deliveries. At the School of Health, it will be the anatomy laboratory, a reference in the Northern Region of Brazil, following various international models. At the end of October, we will inaugurate our model outpatient clinic, which will primarily serve the interior population,” he announced.

Entrance exam and SIS 2025

The Artificial Intelligence course will be among the degrees offered in the 2025 entrance exam with admission in 2026 and in UEA’s SIS. The announcements of the public notices took place this Tuesday. In total, more than 3,700 openings will be available, around 2,000 for the interior and over 1,700 for the capital. The SIS exams are scheduled for October 26, and the entrance exam for October 27 and 28.

The vacancies will be distributed among 91 undergraduate courses, covering 19 municipalities in the State. The notices also provide reserved and supplementary quotas for candidates with disabilities, Black people, Indigenous peoples, and refugees.
