MANAUS – The volume of services in Brazil obtained, in December 2021, the tenth consecutive positive rate compared to December 2020, with 10.4%. Compared to December 2020, this volume advance was accompanied by 24 of the 27 federation units. However, two Amazonian states are among the three where the activity decreased instead of advancing, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In the opposite direction, Amazonas and Rondônia, which are part of the region, decreased -1.7% and -6.0%, respectively. Piauí is the third state that also decreased, with -1.8%.

According to the institute, with this figure, the services sector widened the distance with respect to the pre-pandemic level, standing 6.6% above the February 2020 level, and reached its highest the level since August 2015. In the comparison with December 2020, the transport, services auxiliary to transport and mail (14.9%) and information and communication services (9.9%) sectors exerted the main positive contributions on the total volume of services.

“The other advances came from professional, administrative, and complementary services (7.5%) and from services provided to households (21.5%). In contrast, the only negative rate was with the other services sector (-4.4%)”, added the IBGE.

The economist Orígenes Martins reinforces that the service sector is the largest generator of resources in the economy and, in the pandemic, with restrictive measures, was the most affected sector.

“With the vaccination and the search for economic normalization, the services sector had this recovery already in the fourth stage, contributing in an undeniable way to the recovery of our GDP [Gross Domestic Product]. We must not forget the fact that the services sector is linked to the recovery of employment, which generates income, wealth, and logically the entire economic process”, said the economist.

“The growth of the services sector is a ‘certification’ of Brazil’s economic growth, which many insist on not wanting to accept. I continue with my thought that has been going on since last year, that this year the Brazilian economy is going to take off, especially from the second quarter onwards”, concluded Orígenes.
