AM athletes can accumulate four podiums in national and international competitions

MANAUS (AM) – The Amazonas team of athletes has reached the highest places of the podium in competitions outside the state. Last weekend, wrestling and swimming athletes won gold medals in Brazilian championships, in Brasilia (DF) and in Fortaleza (CE).

A promise in the Amazon sport for the current Olympic cycle, the wrestler Sabrina Gama, 23, secured the first place in the 2023 Brazilian Senior Interclub Wrestling Championship, in the category up to 53 kg senior. The English term wrestling gives its name to the Olympic wrestling tournament, in Greco-Roman and free style.

With the success achieved in the competition, the young woman is now ranked first in the national ranking of the sport, in the pre-Olympic selection dispute. The event took place on Sunday, the 11th, in the federal capital. The athlete participates in the Amazon Project in the Paris Olympics 2024, state government.

“I am happy for another achievement and I thank the support received by the Government of Amazonas, which has been working tirelessly so that the Amazonian sport continues growing and bringing good results. This makes me very happy”, said the athlete, who is part of the Brazilian National Team.

Besides Sabrina, the athlete Helisson Bresson also climbed the podium in the national wrestling championship after winning the 57 kg category. Other Amazonas’ athletes also stood out: Viviane de Almeida – 2nd place (57kg senior); Kenedy Pedrosa – 2nd place (67kg senior); Ketellen Fernandes and Layane Miranda – 5th place (50kg and 62kg)

Open water champion

Amazonian Angelynne Victória, 13, became champion in the five and ten kilometer races, in the Children I category, during the fourth stage of the 28th Brazilian Open Water Interclub Championships. The event was held at Iracema beach, in the state capital of Ceará.

On Saturday, 10, Angelynne was the Brazilian champion in the ten-kilometer race with a time of 2h 46min and 9sec. On Sunday, July 11, she won the five-kilometer race in 1h 20min and 24sec. On July 26 and 27, the athlete will travel to Brasília, to compete in the fifth stage of the championship

“Thank you very much for the support Manaus City Hall, Manaus Sports Foundation, represented by the Olympic Manaus project. Having you with us was essential for us to get this far and get the highest place on the podium. This is our achievement, gratitude”, celebrated the young woman.

Swimming towards the first place

The Amazon swimmer Pietra Menezes, 12, competes in Bauru (SP) in the Brazilian Children’s Swimming Winter Championship, which takes place from June 12 to 17. The athlete is ranked 2nd in Brazil in the children’s category.

Two-time North/Northeast champion in the 50-meter freestyle, the youngster seeks to beat her own records. In the last competition in which she participated, at the Amazonas Swimming Cup, held in May this year, Pietra was champion in the 100 and 50-meter freestyle races, in the absolute category.

“This championship will be very challenging, I will compete in the cold, but my expectations are high. My biggest goal in this competition is to stay on top of the Brazilian ranking in my category in the 50-meter freestyle”, said the swimmer.

Currently, in the children’s category, she holds the second best time in Brazil and has the Amazonas Government’s support, through the Champions Flight project, coordinated by the State Secretariat for Sports and Leisure (Sedel).

From Amazonas to Costa Rica

In search of an international title at the Open Championships of Taekwondo, the Amazonian João Vitor Ferreira, 19, left for the city of Heredia, Costa Rica, on Tuesday, 13, an international dispute that brings together the best fighters of the sport.

Still in his childhood, at the age of nine, he got to know taekwondo in a social project. And, today, he has accumulated several titles, among them the 2nd place in the Brazilian Superchampionship of Taekwondo; Northern Regional Champion; Bronze Medal in the Chile Open G2, besides being seven times champion of the state of Amazonas.

“The Amazonas Government support is allowing me to go to the championship in Costa Rica. And this incentive makes me want to reach my goals, which is to participate in a world championship or even an Olympic edition”, said João Vitor, who received air tickets from Voo Campeão.

The 15th Taekwondo Open Championships are organized by the Costariquense Taekwondo Federation and will take place from June 15 to 18. The event will bring together athletes from countries like the United States, Chile, Puerto Rico, and Guatemala.
