MANAUS – After President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) won Medal of Indigenist Merit, the Federal Lawmaker Jose Ricardo (PT) announced on Wednesday, 16, that entered a Project of Legislative Decree (PDL), in the House of Representatives, to stop the Ordinance and the tribute published on Tuesday, 15.

The lawmaker filed the document which, in its text, suspends the effects of Ordinance 47 of the Ministry of Justice and Public Safety (MJSP), of March 15, 2022. The decree grants the ‘Medal of Indigenist Merit’ to the President of the Republic, government ministers and others.

Now, the House of Representatives must vote on the urgency request for the project and soon after must go through the plenary, which will vote for the suspension or not of the PDL.

The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anderson Torres, by means of Ordinance 47, of March 15, 2022, nominated himself and President Bolsonaro to receive the ‘Medal of Indigenist Merit’ for relevant services to the indigenous cause.

This is because, according to the congressman, Bolsonaro is an enemy of the indigenous peoples. “Since he assumed the presidency, he has been causing real destruction to the lives and rights of the native peoples of this country”, said Zé Ricardo.

Lack of support for the cause

In addition, the parliamentarian also highlighted actions, decrees and indigenous threats during the Bolsonaro government, starting with the dismantling of the Funai (National Indian Foundation), research bodies and Sesai (Indigenous Health Secretariat) and the transfer of the attribution of delimiting indigenous lands to the Ministry of Agriculture, which has resulted in a lack of demarcations.

“The decree is absurd and even seems like a joke. These are anti-indigenous policies of the Bolsonaro government, which only harm the lives and rights of these peoples. Therefore, our indignation and repudiation of this tribute. Our fight will always be for the valorization of life, lands and rights of the indigenous peoples of Brazil”, said the lawmaker.

Understanding the Case

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security has awarded the ‘Medal of Indigenist Merit’ to President Jair Bolsonaro, by means of Ordinance 47 published last Tuesday, 15, in the Official Journal of the Union (DOU).

In addition to Bolsonaro, the honor was distributed to 25 other people, including ministerial and indigenous authorities considered allied to the president, even after Bolsonaro was denounced for the crime of genocide against indigenous people and against humanity in the International Criminal Court (The Hague Court in the Netherlands).
