MANAUS – After the announcement of the campaign ‘I defend quotas – This is the Brazil we approve’ promoted by UNE (National Union of Students), several Brazilian artists have positioned themselves in favor of the campaign that aims to have the Quotas Law (12.711/12) extended as long as necessary. Completing 10 years in 2022, the law must go through a review in the Federal House of Representatives this month.

The campaign was launched by the student organization, in Brasília, on the 9th, during the ‘Ato pela Terra’, through its president, Bruna Brelaz, from the Amazon.

To CENARIUM MAGAZINE, the president explained that this is an agenda that the more support and mobilization from various sectors of society the better to ensure that the Quotas Law is renewed. The student believes that the popular support, from personalities and the artistic class, puts pressure on the parliamentarians for the debate, for the revision and, finally, for the approval.

Among the artists who support the campaign are: singers Criolo, Emicida, Seu Jorge, Duda Beat, Olympic champion volleyball player Fê Garay, and actors Lázaro Ramos and Elisa Lucinda. On Twitter, other artists like Daniela Mercury and Paolla Oliveira have positioned themselves in favor of the project. See at the end of the article.

The president declares that the personalities have embraced the campaign’s ideals very well. “They are artists with progressive thoughts, a history of defending democracy and social agendas”, she defended.

“Remembering that the government does not mention its intentions, and because of its history of lack of educational projects, of democratic projects, the support of society is essential to pressure the government. Gaining support from personalities amplifies our struggles. Historically, the UNE has always had the support of artists, such as the CPC of the UNE, the Biennials, and the UNE Volante”, she said.

The entity launched the campaign aiming to mobilize various sectors of society, including organizations, artists, influencers and youth groups to pressure the National Congress to renew the public policy that made possible the expansion of access of the black and indigenous population to public universities.

Positive public

Asked about how the public will receive the campaign project, she says she expects great support. “This is an agenda that is gaining popular support (60% of the population is in favor of quotas, according to a PoderData survey) and in the media as well. A study by the State University of Maringá found that 89% of the publications in vehicles make favorable mentions to the law, recognizing its achievements”, recalled Bruna.

Bruna says that the Quotas Law was responsible for the transformation in public higher education in the country. “The renewal of the law is necessary as long as there are inequalities in all sectors of society, since this public policy puts the country in a vicious circle in the fight against structural racism and social and racial inequality”, said Brelaz.

For her, it is also very important to remember the need for the law to be revised, keeping the racial criteria and with improvements. “It is necessary to advance in a proposal that contemplates the permanence of students in order to contain the university evasion in the face of the economic crisis we are going through”, said the president of the UNE.
