BELÉM (PA) – The capital of Pará will host, in 2025, the largest and most important annual climate-related conference, COP30, but in the preparations to host the event, Belém is facing problems to accommodate tourists. On August 8 and 9, the city will host the nine presidents who have the Amazon in their territory for the Amazon Summit, with only 5 presidential suites available.

To meet the demand next month, the suites are being adapted to receive the heads of state, in addition to the members of the top echelon of the Lula Government (PT), says the president of the Brazilian Association of the Hotel Industry of Pará (ABIH-PA), Tony Santiago.

“We have excellent beds in presidential suites. The problem is the number of suites that are insufficient. This is already being addressed with the use of other suites as good as, such as masters suites, VIPs and etc.”, explains Santiago.

For the Amazon Summit, the alternative may even work, but for COP30 the plan needs to be different. Currently, Belém’s hotel network has 25,367 beds available, which is far below the estimated demand for the Climate Conference, which is expected to attract around 60,000 people.

“Like all major events in Belém, the lack of beds is evident and no one will invest in hotel equipment just for an event. For this reason, we have already given several suggestions and alternatives to get around this situation in a letter delivered to the city hall and state government”, concludes the president of the association.

City Hall’s plan for the Summit

With the large audience expected, the city of Belém informed on Wednesday, 26, that it is committed to providing accommodation spaces and assistance to the hotel chain. Therefore, Aldeia Cabana, located in the Pedreira neighborhood, will be given to house representatives of social movements that will participate in the Assembly of the Peoples of the Earth for the Amazon between August 7 and 9.

Health and Safety

The Municipal Health Secretariat (Sesma), together with the State Health Secretariat (Sespa), is preparing a health back-up plan to assist the participants of the events.

In security, the Executive Superintendence of Urban Mobility (Semob) and the Belém Municipal Guard (GMB) are involved in the Public Security Committee with state agencies and the Federal Police (PF).

“We will have a very large participation of people such as environmentalists, indigenous movements, quilombolas and traditional communities in general so that we can deliver to the presidents (of the participating countries) documents calling for decisions in the perspective of reducing poverty and combating the climate crisis”, declares Mayor Edmilson Rodrigues.
