‘Hutukara’: Salgueiro chooses storyline about Yanomami mythology for 2024 Carnaval

MANAUS – The Salgueiro Samba School, in Rio de Janeiro, announced this Sunday, 5, the title of the storyline for Carnaval 2024. Inspired by the struggle of indigenous peoples, the samba school will take to the avenue the mythology of the Yanomami Indigebous people, through the title “Hutukara”.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary today, the Sambadrome chose to present the title as a gift to the Sambadrome community. “Hutukara basically means ‘land’ to the Yanomami. The synopsis that will inspire the composers will be released in May,” wrote Edson Pereira, Salgueiro’s carnavalesco.

“We are in the research phase and very fascinated with everything we are reading and seeing. Through Yanomami mythology, we want to make an emphatic defense of the Amazon, showing how important this exuberant nature is to all of us. It is a very sacred storyline,” comments Pereira.

Challenge

The research and assembly of the plot was in charge of the Rio de Janeiro journalist Igor Ricardo, known for collecting “notes 10” in the category by the associations in which he passed.

“This is a challenge that goes far beyond my professional side, since it also involves my emotional side. I have always wanted to be closer to my school, and this is an opportunity to make myself available to Edson Pereira in the construction of this project,” said the sailor who was responsible for the foundation of the school’s first official supporters group, Torcida Explode Coração.

Yanomami

The choice of theme comes after news about the abandonment of the Yanomami indigenous people took over the media. At the beginning of the year, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was in Roraima, where most of the Yanomami Indigenous Land is located, and declared a public health emergency due to cases of severe malnutrition, deaths, and hunger.

According to Salgueiro’s carnival director, the school’s objective is to take the defense of indigenous peoples to the avenue and make the discussion about the theme even more in vogue. “We are going to defend the native peoples through Yanomami mythology,” he says.
