MANAUS – The new commander of the Brazilian Army, General Julio Cesar de Arruda, will take office on Friday, 30, two days before the inauguration of President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Appointed by the future president, Arruda’s main challenge is to mediate the increasing tension of demonstrators in Brasilia.

There’s also the possibility that the inauguration of the commander of the Brazilian Navy may be brought forward to December 28 or 29, with the name of Marcos Sampaio taking the place of squadron commander Almir Garnier Santos.

The Civil Police of the Federal District investigate that there were preparations in the pro-Bolsonaro camp for the bombing of the Brasilia airport, prevented by the action of the Federal Police, which culminated in the arrest of businessman George Washington de Oliveira Sousa, 54, last December 24.

According to reports from the delegate in charge of the case, George confessed that he planned the action with fellow members of the camp to draw the attention of supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), against the election of Lula.

The orchestrated action caused a public commotion, especially among Lula’s allies, who see the risk of more terrorist acts in the coming days. With Arruda’s inauguration, what is expected is a tougher position, to put an end to the camp at army headquarters, which has lasted almost two months.

In addition to the failed attempt at the airport, on 23 December, the police were called after a bomb threat on a bus in the central region, in Asa Sul. On the 25th, several explosives (totalling around 40 kg) were found in Gama, a region around 40 km from the centre.

On 12 December, the date of Lula’s graduation, after the arrest of an alleged indigenous leader, Bolsonar militants began acts of vandalism across Brasilia. They tried to invade the headquarters of the Federal Police, at the beginning of Asa Norte, a prime area of Brasília, set fire to cars, buses, broke a police station, among other acts of extremism.
