MANAUS – The Art Gallery, of the Instituto Brasil – Estados Unidos (Icbeu), presents the exhibition “The Other Colors”, on display since May 9th, being a meeting of 24 artists from Amazonas, under the curatorship of the producer and artist Sérgio Cardoso. The Icbeu is located at Joaquim Nabuco Avenue, 1286. The visits can take place from Monday to Friday, from 3 pm to 8 pm, and on Saturdays from 9 am to noon.
Present at the exhibition for a chat with artist Otoni Mesquita, one of the exhibitors of the show, the students of the master’s degree in Society and Culture in the Amazon, from the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam), led by professor Artêmis Soares, a professor who leads the master’s degree at Ufam and a member of the Academia Amazonense de Letras (AAL), talked about the meeting.
“This event brings to us, artists, the Manaus and Amazonian context. These are scenes from Manaus that we know, scenes from the interior of Amazonas, and this serves us as an object of study, because it shows us the reality portrayed through the eyes of the artist. This is fundamental for a master’s degree that goes in search of the deep Amazon”, Artêmis pondered.

“The exhibition is extremely important for us to bring science from the classroom to look at the Amazon through art, and this goes beyond what we usually see,” she observed. “We have here the representation of colors, symbols, a diversity essay”, she analyzed.

Highlight
General secretary of Icbeu and responsible for the institution’s cultural agenda, Ruth Alencar highlighted the gallery’s role in the local cultural scene. “We have a generation of contemporary artists who have been coming here since the 2000s, when my father inaugurated this gallery, and according to two of them, Sergio Cardoso and Otoni Mesquita, this is the best and largest gallery in the city. Here we have hosted several shows with incentives to new artists. Here we have revealed talents such as Ádna Abreu, for example”, she recalled.
Alencar advanced the 2023 agenda without giving further details. “Even with the pandemic, the gallery didn’t stop. We had exhibitions of artists such as Ádna Abreu, Francimar Barbosa, and Rubens Belém”, she recalled. When asked about projects, Ruth answered.
“We do four exhibitions a year, two each semester. We are now with “The Other Colors”, but we still have another great solo exhibition coming up. This work is by a very dear artist in the city of Manaus, but it’s still a surprise”, she said.
