MANAUS – The Volunteer Support Group (GAV) performs this Friday, 23, the biggest Christmas dinner for homeless people in Manaus. On the eve of Christmas celebrations, GAV will deliver, at Heliodoro Balbi Square, former Police Square, Downtown, more than 1 thousand meals to the socially vulnerable population. This is the third time that the social organisation will perform the action in the city centre.

In 2019, 800 meals were delivered, already in 2020, 600 feedings. Last year, the social action was not held because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Gav coordinator, Fabiana Carioca, explains that this edition of the solidarity supper is special and held according to health standards. Tables will be placed by the square, with the distance of one meter and a half, so that people who attend feel safe so that the event does not fail to happen.

“The GAV could not fail to close the year doing, again, the Solidarity Christmas in Manaus Center. This year, we are delivering the largest amount of lunch box, 1 thousand meals. Christmas means love and nothing better than this supper to give people a special night”, said Fabiana.

In addition to the meals, clothes were distributed in a Solidarity Bazaar. “Each person will be able to buy between 4 and 5 pieces of clothing to spend Christmas more coated and with dignity. This is GAV’s proposal”, explained Fabiana.

Merit

Severino Rufino was passing by Heliodoro Balbi Square and enjoyed his supper. “If everyone helped, no one would go hungry at Christmas and New Year. There are people who have money, but don’t want to help. And all this that is being done will improve the end of the year of many people who are in need”, says Severino.

There are five months in Manaus, Laura Morales’s family left Venezuela bound for the Amazon capital in search of employment. With difficult financial situation, she took advantage that the action was happening to have dinner with her family.

“I’m still looking for a job and, at this moment, the financial difficulties are big, and this opportunity, on such a special date, helps my family. I really appreciate the opportunity that you are giving us tonight”, said Laura.
