MANAUS – A raw material considered more sustainable and economical when used as fuel, natural gas will have its market expanded in the Amazon. On Monday, 21st, governor Wilson Lima signed a protocol of intentions aiming to study the feasibility of using the product in vessels, vehicles, and buildings in Manaus.
According to the governor, the partnership also seeks to expand the access to the benefits of the fuel to the Amazon population, through the cooperation of the Gas Company of Amazonas (Cigás), also reducing the consumption of electricity and its cost to people.
“It is an important step that we are taking in the concept of sustainability and also in the use of our riches, which is mainly the issue of natural gas. For many years there was a monopoly in Amazonas and we, with a lot of struggle and work, had the courage to break this. Today, the state is among the three largest in Brazil in gas regulation. Before, we were the last and now we are advancing to be the first”, highlighted the governor.
Wilson Lima also said that the government is opening the possibility of natural gas exploration in Campo do Azulão, in the Autazes reserve, 111 kilometers from Manaus, where Eneva S.A. has a Gas Treatment Unit (GTU). The governor estimates that new enterprises seek to settle in Amazonas to use the raw material.
“There is nothing more fair than using this natural gas to help us solve some of our problems and also to reduce costs, especially with electricity,” said Governor Wilson Lima.
Cigás
According to the CEO of Cigás, René Levy Aguiar, the protocol of intentions will have the Amazon population as the biggest beneficiary, providing better quality of life and greater economic advantages.
“Today we are aware of this, because 70% of the energy produced in the city of Manaus is by means of natural gas. The thermoelectric plants that used to use diesel oil to generate energy now use natural gas, which means that, in addition to the favorable environmental issue, because it is a much less polluting product than other fossil fuels, it ends up being cheaper”, said René Aguiar.
